Extremo Sur - River Manso Expedition

Agenda:

Day 1: Lake Steffen - Puerto Manso Ranch

We leave Bariloche at 10 a.m. through National Route 40, proceeding to Lake Steffen, passing lakes Gutiérrez, Mascardi and Guillelmo.
Once by the side of Lake Steffen, while the guides prepare the gear, we change into our rafting attire. After a brief talk by the head-guide, we are ready to descend the Manso River. Surrounded by high mountains and lush vegetation, our raft drifts downstream, while we can observe the flora and fauna of the National Park.
After about 8 Km, we stop on a beautiful sand beach, where we will enjoy a cold lunch. After lunch, we get ready to resume our trip. From this point on, the Manso gets more and more thrilling. Uvasal (Alka Seltzer), Banda de Billar (Billiard Edge), Diente de Hipopótamo (Hippo Tooth), Montaña Rusa (Roller-coaster) and Roca Magnética (Magnetic Rock) are some of the rapids we will run that day (Class II - III). After the confluence with the Villegas River, the river turns westward and forms the great valley of the Lower Manso, with majestic views of Mounts Ventisquero and Bastión.
At the end of the trip, we stop on the river bank. The day ends with an exquisite hot meal at Puerto Manso.

Day 2. Puerto Manso Ranch – John’s Ranch.

After breakfast, we resume rafting in a quiet section of the river, which offers very good fishing spots. After midday, we leave Mt. Santa Elena behind, which we have been surrounding during these two days, and upon reaching the confluence with the Foyel River, we can observe the hanging glacier of Mt. Ventisquero (one of the most important ones in the area). We will finally spend the night at the foot of the imposing Mt. Bastión, at the John family’s property, where we will have asado (grilled meat).

Day 3. John’s Ranch – Border with Chile.

In the morning, after breakfast, we get ready to run the last section of the Manso in Argentina. We can say that this section concentrates the best rafting rapids in the region. Here, the Manso gets more impetuous. On our raft, we will run exciting rapids through narrow canyons surrounded by lush vegetation. El cajón de terciopelo (Velvet Box), Agujero de ozono (Ozone Hole), Gritá y doblá a la izquierda (Screaming Turn Left) and Tobogancito (Little Toboggan) are some of the rapids in this section.
After a short break on a beach with a beautiful sight of a waterfall, we go back on board to run the following rapids: Garganta profunda (Deep Gorge), Éxtasis (Ecstasy), Huevo revuelto (Scrambled Egg), Colmillo (Eye Tooth) and Internacional (International). On our way along the Andes Range, we are accompanied by deep gorges.

Our trip ends when we get to the Chilean border. The border marker crowns the place. We load the gear, and we return to John’s ranch, leaving the imposing Mt. Bastión behind. The unmistakable smell of a tasty Patagonian asado (grilled meat) invites us to sit around the table, where we can also eat delicious salads and exquisite homemade desserts. The John family makes the food with great care, using products grown in their garden and field. We then return to Bariloche.

Includes: Transfers, guides, safety kayak for day 3, river equipment (neoprene suit and waterproof jacket), support raft, dry bags for personal clothing, watertight boxes for photography equipment, accommodation places and all the meals mentioned above: breakfast, lunch, happy hour and hot meal and wine for the night.
